Description

Objective: To explore the significance of changes of serum TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-8 levels after treatment in patients with chronic prostatitis. Methods: Serum TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-8 levels (with RIA) were detected both before and after treatment in 42 patients with chronic prostatitis as well as in 35 controls. Results: Before treatment, the serum TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-8 levels in the patients were significantly higher than those in controls (P<0.01). After 2 weeks of treatment, the IL-6 and IL -8 levels, though dropped markedly, remained significantly higher than those in controls (P<0.05). However, the serum TNF-α levels were not much different from those in controls. Conclusion: TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-8 could take part in the pathogenesis of chronic prostatitis in various ways and determination of these levels is clinically important. (authors)
