Design concept and performance of a successful thermal storage

Description
Many thermal storage systems have been introduced in the last years into the market. The majority of these systems are not flexible enough to optimize their storage volume for the most economical system configuration. The performance data for storage charging and discharging is supplied by some manufacturers, but not all, and often is quite sketchy. The lack of testing methods for thermal storages makes it difficult to compare the systems in current operation. However, a successful implementation of the ice storage system S.W.P. (Spheric Water Packets) has given the user a better solution for thermal storage. The concept of thermal storage which transfers loads from expensive day peak time rates to less expensive night time rates will take on added importance in energy management of new and retrofit buildings. The paper will describe the structure of the system, performance, selection of suitable buildings, storage, design, and controls. (Author)
