Description
The paper presents removal of 90Sr from liquid waste generated in Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR) of Madras Atomic Power Station (MAPS) using manganese based sorbent coated acrylic fibers. Sorption capacity of the above said sorbent for stable strontium in solution at pH 7.0 was estimated and it was found to be about 1.0 meq. Sr/g. Decontamination of 90Sr was carried out in radioactive liquid wastes (pH 7.5) containing 137Cs, 134Cs, 90Sr and 60Co using the above manganese based sorbent coated acrylic fibers (10 g) containing about 2 gm sorbent at the flow rate of 10 ml per minute. Sorption efficiency of manganese based sorbent for strontium was found to be consistently 96% with the corresponding decontamination factor (DF) of 23. Similar decontamination study was carried out using the same manganese based sorbent and 10 lit. of radioactive liquid waste spiked with stable strontium. Sorption efficiency of the sorbent for strontium de from 99% to 47% with the corresponding decrease in DF from 86 to 2. This study has demonstrated that 90Sr can be effectively removed by manganese based sorbent coated acrylic fibers in presence of 137Cs, 134Cs and 60Co. (author)
