Storms disperse waste

Description
A tracer technique was used to investigate the movement of chemical waste that is dumped in Bass Strait from a paint pigment factory in northern Tasmania. A gold-198 labelled ferric hydroxide floc was mixed with the waste. It was found that during relatively calm weather the waste accumulates on the sea bed near the outfall, but that during storms the accumulated waste can be transported shorewards by wind driven sea currents
