3-D tensor pressure equilibria for EBT

  • 1. Oak Ridge National Lab., TN

Description

Techniques for calculating magnetohydrostatic equilibria with tensor pressure are reviewed. Algorithms for computing 3-D hot electron ring equilibria for the Elmo Bumpy Torus (EBT) with a separable model for the pressure tensor are discussed, as are the numerical methods used in the implementation of those algorithms in a computer code. Some typical results of 3-D equilibrium calculations for EBT-I/S and an EBT reactor conceptual design illustrate the effects of the relativistic electron annuli on the magnetic field. Two significant additions to the 3-D code are planned for the near-term and discussed in this paper. This first concerns the addition of an isotropic pressure component to model the core plasma in EBT. The second is the inclusion of the flow and electric field terms in the momentum balance equation. A straightforward method of including mass flow due to the E Vector x B Vector plasma rotation and a discussion of its possible importance for 3-D equilibria in EBT are presented
