The neutron physics at LAMPF

Description

The nuclear physics laboratories, the neutron beam and the multiwire proportional chamber spectrometer used in neutron physics experiments at 645 and 800 Mev at Clinton P. Anderson Meson Physics Facility are described. A nearly monoenergetic beam is obtained by collimating the zero degree neutrons from the reaction d(p, n)2p. This beam has been used to measure n-p elastic scattering with high precision at 645 and 800 Mev, for the angular range from 50 to 180 degrees in the centre of mass system. The value of the pion-nucleon coupling constant extracted from the data is 0.074 +- 0.0032, in good agreement with the value obtained from pion-nucleon scattering. Other experiments include measurements of the angular distributions of neutral and charged pions produced in collisions of deuteron produced in n-d collisions and of protons, deuterons and tritons produced in neutron bombardment of other nuclei, as well as measurement of momentum spectrum of neutrons produced in proton bombardment of various light nuclei. The current status in the analysis and interpretation of these data is also summarised. (author)
