Neutron induced radiation damage in metals
Creators
- 1. Chalmers Univ. of Technology, Goeteborg (Sweden). Dept. of Reactor Physics
Description
Radiation damage, induced by neutrons, is considered to proceed in two steps: production of primary knock-on atoms (PKA), that further dissipate their energy by series of collisions with the host atoms, initiating collision cascades. Energy spectra of PKA, generated in copper and gold by irradiation in a fast reactor and by 14 MeV neutrons, have been interfaced with the binary collision cascade code MARLOWE. The total number of defects created per PKA has been estimated. The spatial arrangement of the defects, i.e. depth distribution and cluster formation, is investigated for PKA at different energy. Effects of the material structure (amorphous or crystalline) have been discussed
