The radiative decay of autoionizing states under three-photon ionization of an ytterbium atom
Description
An essential reduction of the amplitude of the maximum related to two-photon excitation of the singlet 6s8d1D2 state of an ytterbium atom in the process of three-photon ionization is found. The radiative decay into the ground atomic state of the autoionizing f136s27g[1/2]10 state excited by three photons appears to be a possible cause of this effect. Such a process is competitive with the three-photon ionization and results in a substantial reduction of the number of Yb+ ions produced and, hence, leads to the reduction of the amplitude of the maximum under consideration
