Galaxy Markaryan 348

  • 1. Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory, Armenian Academy of Sciences

Description

Digital processing of a 2.6-m telescope plate of the galaxy Mrk 348 reveals an optical envelope of maximum diameter 164'' (50 kpc), nearly twice the Holmberg diameter. Spectra taken with the 6-m telescope for a galaxy physically associated with Mrk 348 yield a radial velocity of 4833 +- 41 km/sec for the companion, implying that the whole system has an orbital mass M = 3 x 1011 M/sub sun/ and a ratio M/L = 15 (M/L)/sub sun/. Together with its optical envelope Mrk 348 has a mass of about 1011 M/sub sun/
