A computerised information system for the processing of borehole data with regard to uranium sources in the Republic of South Africa

Description
The various mining companies in the Republic of South Africa are under legal obligation to supply data concerning uranium resources to the Atomic Energy Board. As the process of manually summarising data and retrieving information for a great number of boreholes is a time-consuming and tedious task, a computerised system was needed to supply this information in a meaningful manner. Following a thorough systems analysis, a database information system was designed. Application programs were developed for the input, processing and tabulation of the data. This report describes the data-base organisation, consisting of a network of master and transaction files. A master file contains one or more keys which are used to input data into or extract data from a transaction file. Master and transaction files are normally linked by means of a linkpath, but in this application it was necessary to define some master files as unlinked units. The input into the database consists of administrative, stratigraphic and lithological data as well as data of gold, uranium, silver, thorium, platinum, sulphur and molybdenum mineralisation. Five types of data cards were developed to record the abovementioned information. Examples of the various data cards are contained in the report. On retrieving data the user of this system has several options regarding the sequence in which information is retrieved and the contents of the tables. The procedure to be used and the various options ar summarised in detail. The appendices summarise the utility programs, supporting job-control language and code lists. Die onderskeie mynmaatskappye in die Republiek van Suid-Afrika is onder 'n wetlike verpligting om data betreffende uraanreserwes aan die Raad op Atoomkrag beskikbaar te stel. Aangesien dit 'n tydrowende en veeleisende proses is om uittreksels uit en opsommings van data van 'n groot aantal boorgate te maak, het die behoefte ontstaan om 'n gerekanariseerde stelsel te ontwerp om inligting op 'n sinvolle wyse te verstrek. Na 'n deeglike stelselontleding is 'n inligtingstelsel ontwerp wat op 'n databasis berus. Toepassingsprogrammatuur vir die invoer, verwerking en tabellering van data is ontwikkel. Hierdie verslag bevat 'n beskrywing van die organisasie van die databasis wat uit 'n netwerk van meester- en transaksieleers bestaan. 'n Meesterleer bevat een of meer sleutels waarmee inligting in 'n transaksieleer opgeskryf of daaruit onttrek kan word. Meester - en transaksieleers is normaalweg deur middel van 'n koppelvlak verbind, maar in hierdie toepassing was dit nodig om sommige meesterleers as nie-gekoppelde eenhede te definieer. Die invoer in die databasis bestaan uit administratiewe, stratigrafiese en litologiese data en data betreffende goud-, uraan-, silwer-, torium-, platinum-, swael- en molibdeen-mineralisasie. Vyf tipes datakaarte is ontwikkel waarop bogenoemde inligting aangeteken word. Voorbeelde van die onderskeie kaarttipes is in die verslag opgeneem. By die herwinning van inligting het die gebruiker van hierdie stelsel verskeie keuses ten opsigte van die volgorde waarin inligting onttrek kan word en ook ten opsigte van die tabelinhoud. Die prosedure wat gevolg moet word en die onderskeie keuses wat uitgeoefen kan word, word volledig beskryf. Die bylaes bevat 'n opsomming van die nutsprogramme, ondersteunende taakbeheertaal en kodelyste. Die programmatuur is in PL/1 geskryf en die databasis is die TOTAL DATA BASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM - RELEASE 8,0 van CINCOM SYSTEMS, INCFiles
