Low cost B--Al composites by cast tape

Description
A low cost, fully densified B/Al material form, i.e., continuous cast tape produced with nitrided boron, is described. Results show that this material exhibits excellent longitudinal properties even after secondary processing at 1100-11600F. The transverse strength of the cast tape material was found, however, to be lower than that of conventional diffusion bonded B/Al. The tradeoff between a thick nitride coating which provides high longitudinal strength but low transverse strength, and a thinner coating with its improved transverse values but lower longitudinal values, is discussed
