Synthesis of Al2O3 and MgAl2O4 ceramic coated UO2 fuel particles

Description
A new technology for the preparation of ceramic (Al2O3 or MgAl2O4) coated spherical shaped uranium dioxide fuel particles has been developed. The heat treatment procedure and integrity of the coatings were studied using Thermogravimetric and Differential Thermal Analysis (TGA/DTA) and optical microscopy. A Sol-Gel based synthesis process was used and the process of gel particle formation and its hardening was monitored using optical microscopy during various stages of the synthesis process. (author)
