The study of galaxy evolution has moved beyond present-epoch galaxies to an investigation of galaxy properties as a function of cosmological lookback time. In this paper observational projects of this type are reviewed, from the search for fluctuations in the microwave background radiation, through the first signs of galaxy formation, to the detection of surprisingly rapid evolution of galaxies since z = 1
