New aspects of radiation protection and nuclear safety analysis; development of safety concepts and safety systems

This paper presents a survey of the results achieved in recent years in the development and codification of technical safety requirements in the areas of radiation protection and reactor safety. This includes a review of the completed and of the still proceeding work on the formulation of assessment standards and on the specification of limit values for the emission of radioactive substances. In addition, a survey is presented of the state of the discussion on the integrity of the primary circuit of light water reactors and on the development of a protection against bursting, as well as of the state of the investigations relating to some of the most important safety installations such as the containment and the emergency core cooling system. The currently valid design specifications relating to the protection of nuclear power plants against external occurrences, and the most recent developments in the area of accident analysis are discussed. The results of the so-called Rasmussen study are briefly reported. (orig.)
