Study of manganese and its oxides by photoelectron spectroscopy

Description

This study enabled the determination of the binding energies of the 2p1/2, 2p3/2 and 3p1/2 3/2 levels of manganese, in various chemical forms: metal, MnO oxides, Mn3O4, Mn2O3 and MnO2 and hydroxide Mn(OH)2. The oxygen binding energies corresponding to each of these species have been determined. Other forms of oxygen that can also be present on the surface of the samples have been established: oxygen of adsorbed water (OH- ions) and adsorbed oxygen. The methods of preparation of the various oxides in 'thin layer', based on the thermodynamic stability data of each of the oxide forms, have made it possible to verify discrepancies in these data in the case of the thermal preparation of oxide MnO2, these deviations being of kinetic origin. Similarly, it has been verified that the oxidation of manganese follows the general laws of metal oxidation. The use of the Pourbaix diagram has been very effective in the formation of oxides. Thus, electrochemical oxidation seems to be a new way for the preparation of these compounds in 'thin layer'. Some properties of prepared substances have been put into evidence. The study of the behaviour of the metal manganese in the presence of water vapour helped to detect the formation of hydroxide.

Abstract (French)

Cette etude a permis la determination des energies de liaison des niveaux 2p1/2, 2p3/2 et 3p1/2 3/2 du manganese, sous diverses formes chimiques: metal, oxydes MnO, Mn3O4, Mn2O3 et MnO2 et hydroxyde Mn(OH)2. Nous avons determine les energies de liaison de l'oxygene correspondant a chacune de ces especes. D'autres formes d'oxygene pouvant etre aussi presentes a la surface des echantillons consideres ont ete mises en evidence: oxygene de l'eau adsorbee (ions OH-) et oxygene adsorbe. Les methodes de preparation des divers oxydes en 'couche mince', basees sur les donnees de stabilite thermodynamique de chacune des formes oxydees ont permis de verifier des ecarts a ces donnees dans le cas de la preparation de l'oxyde MnO2 par voie thermique, ces deviations etant d'origine cinetique. De meme nous avons verifie que l'oxydation du manganese suivait les lois generales de l'oxydation des metaux. L'utilisation du diagramme de Pourbaix s'est revele tres performante en ce qui concerne la formation des oxydes. Ainsi, l'oxydation electrochimique semble donc une voie nouvelle pour la preparation de ces composes en 'couche mince'. Quelques proprietes des substances preparees ont ete mises en evidence. L'etude du comportement du manganese metallique en presence de vapeur d'eau a permis de deceler la formation de l'hydroxyde. (auteur)
