Analysis of cogeneration of electricity, desalinated water and pink hydrogen from a 75 MW micro nuclear reactor

  • 1. LabMEMS/POLI&COPPE, UFRJ, Rio de Janeiro, RJ (Brazil)

Description

In this work, we will use the DE-TOP and DEEP codes, developed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), to perform the thermodynamic analysis of the coupling of the desalination plant to the secondary circuit of a Micro Nuclear Reactor with a thermal power of 75 MWt (DESSAL reactor) and the economic analysis of the process in question. Also aiming at decarbonization, hydrogen emerges as a promising source of energy to reduce CO2 generation levels in the industry. The main problem of the economics of hydrogen as a source of decarbonization is the energy source with which it is produced, however this problem is solved when it is produced from the electrical energy coming from a nuclear power plant. The so-called pink hydrogen is that produced by the water electrolysis reaction, where the necessary electricity is supplied by a nuclear power plant. The water required for the production of pink hydrogen will be that produced by the desalination plant. In this work, we will also analyze the relationship between the efficiency of the electrolysis process and the temperature at which it occurs, to optimize hydrogen production. The present work aims to find the optimal configuration for the cogeneration of electricity, desalinated water and pink hydrogen from a 75MWt MNR
