Detection of irradiated foods
Description
Development of a reliable method for detection of irradiated foods is seen as a prerequisite for the introduction of appropriate and credible food labelling legislation which will be required to accompany the commencement of food irradiation in Australia. Over the last three years the Queensland Food Research Laboratories have been investigating a number of techniques to determine their suitability for the above purpose. These techniques have included analysis of DNA, measurement of pigment levels and enzyme activity and changes in volatile components and microbial flora. Some of the results are summarized in this article. 7 refs., 1 tab
