Dielectric properties of a current-carrying plasma in a helical magnetic field

Description
Using the geometric-optics approximation the radial structure and the Cherenkov damping of the short-wave Kinetic Alfven, fast Alfven, fast magnetosonic oscillations, and atmospheric whistlers in the nonuniform current-carrying plasma with 'hot' electrons were considered. The obtained formulae for real and imaginary parts of the radial refractive index under the given frequency, azimuthal and longitudinal wavenumbers are applied in the wide range of the relation wave phase velocity to electron thermal velocity. For the fast magnetosonic waves, the ion-cyclotron damping has been evaluated taking into account the equilibrium current and magnetic shear correction. (author). 5 refs
