Determination of electron-atom collision frequency in an arc plasma

  • 1. North Bengal Univ., Darjeeling (India). Dept. of Physics

Description

Taking into consideration the radial distribution of conductivity of an arc plasma and the change in the distribution function when the positive column of the plasma is placed in a longitudinal magnetic field, a method has been developed to obtain the momentum transfer electron, atom collision frequency. An experiment has been performed where arc current up to 3 amps. and magnetic field up to 225 gauss has been used. The collision frequency calculated from experimental data is consistent with literature values and increases with the arc current. Interpretation of the observed results has been provided.
