Effects of heavy ions on the proliferation and differentiation of mouse melanocytes

Description
Effects of the irradiation of heavy ions on the proliferation and differentiation of embryonic mammalian cells were investigated in this study. We selected melanocytes for this purpose, since melanin synthesis in melanocytes is easily observable in vivo. Pregnant females of C57BL/10J mice crossed with C57BL/10J males were whole-body irradiated with a single acute dose of Fe ions to investigate their effects on embryonic melanoblasts. The effect was studied by scoring changes in the cutaneous coats of F1 offspring 3 weeks after birth. White spots were found in the ventrum and tail tips of the offspring. These results suggest that Fe ions affect the proliferation and differentiation of melanocytes in the mouse skin. (author)
