Suprathermal electron generation in laser fusion targets

  • 1. Osaka Univ., Suita (Japan). Inst. of Laser Engineering

Description

Suprathermal electron generation from cannonball targets was investigated by a 1.05 μm, Gekko MII laser. It showed very high temperatures (TSH = 200 - 350 keV) and energy conversion efficiencies (ηSH = 10-5 - 10-4 J/J str) in comparison with directly driven targets in Gekko XII laser fusion experiments. Correlation of suprathermal electron production with stimulated Raman scattering and three-half harmonic light conclusively indicated that these electrons were mainly generated by parametric processes in the region below quarter critical density.
