Activation reaction 12C(n,p)12B as a spin analyzer for fast neutrons

  • 1. Institut de Physique Corpusculaire, Universite Catholique, de Louvain, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium

Description

It is shown that 12B nuclei produced in the 12C(n,p)12B reaction are polarized. The polarization of 12B is measured through its beta-decay asymmetry. The analyzing ''efficiency'' epsilon = P/sub N//P/sub n/ (12B polarization versus that of the incident neutron) for longitudinally polarized neutrons of average energy E-bar/sub n/ = 18 MeV is: Vertical Barepsilon/sub L/Vertical Bar = 0.11 +- 0.02
