Basic realizability of the fuel cycle from the point of view of safety

RSK and SSK are of the opinion that the facilities for the final treatment of radioactive wastes, taking into account the recommendations made, can be realized and operated safely. The methods for treating medium and slightly active wastes, which were not dealt with individually during the assessment, are based on prevalent and well-tried processes; thus they are the present state of the art. The results available from R + D work concerning the treatment of highly active wastes demonstrate that these techniques also can be realized and operated with the safety required. Thus, RSK and SSK conclude that the protection necessary as regards radiological and other effects of the facility can be warranted in routine operation and in the case of incidents. (orig.)
