Transport of radioisotopes in Japan

Laws and regulations in Japan stipulate that radioisotopes, etc. should be transported in safe packing by safe handling. According to the transport regulations by IAEA, such stipulation is provided for the respective means of land, sea and air transport. RIs, etc. of about 3700 pieces are thus sent across the country from the Tokyo area by trucks and aircrafts, in types L and A yearly. The transport of radioisotopes, etc. must be made rationally with adequate knowledge. The following matters are described: laws and regulations; the regulations on transport standards, the confirmation of safe transport, and the safety of packed pieces; the regulations of the safe transport of radioactive materials by IAEA; the situation of the transport of RIS, etc. including types L, A and B, and transport means; the problems for the future.
