Two-component Pomeron and proton-proton total cross section at high energies

  • 1. Fukushima Univ. (Japan). Faculty of Education

Description

The so-called Pomeron contribution to hadron total cross sections has two components; the first one increases and the second one decreases slowly as energy increases. The components estimated from total cross section data at FNAL energies are parametrized by means of the least-square fit. Predictions on pp scattering are compared with ISR data in order to discriminate the parametrizations. The ratio of the real to imaginary parts of the forward pp scattering amplitude is also investigated. The case in which the first component increases as logs and the second one decreases to a finite value brings the best fit. Comparison between the predicted and the experimental values of pp to total cross section is made in the cosmic-ray energy region. The log2s rise of total cross section is not rejected at present.
