Guidelines for the design of radiation protection program for carriers of radioactive materials
Description
Over the years, the dose limit for personnel involved in activities with ionizing radiation and people, has generally become lower without a similar requirement for lower dose rates of packages containing radioactive material, has been introduced. The transport of packages containing radioactive material has been given low doses in most cases, but sometimes relatively high doses occur. As the number of transports is increasing and is expected to grow in the future, it is now required by stakeholders in the transport and related activities to have have a documented, systematic and structured program, so that individual doses are kept as low as possible with respect to economic and social factors. To optimize the performance of radiation protection has long been the driving force behind the development of radiation protection in other activities, and it is now expected to be so also for radiation protection developments in transport, with the requirement of establishing a general radiation protection program. By following the guidelines given in this report the doses received by workers and the public are expected to be kept at a reasonably low level, taking into account both economic and social factors and should not pose a significant financial or administrative burden on carriers.
