Brazil: completing Angra-2 for 1999 start-up

The Brazilian Government's decision in early 1995 to finish Angra-2 to start commercial operation in June 1999 to meet the increasing energy demand in Brazil's south/southeast regions has brought the project to its final stage. All the companies such as Furnas, Siemens and Nuclen responsible for completion of the unit in accordance with the very ambitious project time schedule, have made tremendous efforts to speed up all their activities, already in 1995 and in particular after the main erection began on site in May 1996. The long construction period of Angra-2 gave time for improvements and adaptations -derived from the development of engineered safety features in German NPP technology - to be implemented in the Brazilian unit. As a result, Angra-2's safety conforms to the utmost with the present state-of-art of the German Konvoi plants. figs., tabs., refs
