Spectroscopic observations of HZ Herculis

Description

Spectra have been obtained of HZ Her, the optical counterpart of the pulsating X-ray source Her X-1 (= 2U 1705+34), which show variable Ca ii K absorption, xx464O 650 and 686 emission, and He I absorption lines. The emission lines vary on a timescale as short as 30 . The Ca II and the He I features indicate a composite spectrum combining A- and B-star characteristics.
