Organization of a multichannel analyzer for gamma ray spectrometry

Description

This report describes the software organization of a medium scale multichannel analyzer for qualitative and quantitative measurements of the gamma rays emitted by radioactive samples. The first part reminds basis of radioactivity, principle of gamma ray detection, and data processing used for interpretation of a nuclear spectrum. The second part describes first the general organization of the software and then gives some details on interactivity, multidetector capabilites, and integration of complex algorithms for peak search and nuclide identification;problems encountered during the design phase are mentioned and solutions are given. Basic ideas are presented for further developments, such as expert system which should improve interpretation of the results. This present software has been integrated in a manufactured multichannel analyzer named 'POLYGAM NU416'.

Abstract (French)

Ce memoire presente l'organisation logicielle d'un analyseur multicanal milieu de gamme, assurant la mesure qualitative et quantitative des rayonnements gamma emis par des sources radioactives. Dans une premiere partie, nous expliquons le phenomene de la radioactivite, le mecanisme de la detection des rayonnements gamma, et les traitements utilises pour depouiller un spectre. Au cours de la deuxieme partie, nous decrivons tout d'abord l'ensemble du logiciel en insistant sur l'interactivite, l'acquisition simultanee sur 4 voies independantes, l'integration d'algorithmes de traitements complexes; puis nous abordons les problemes rencontres au cours de l'etude ainsi que les solutions adoptees pour les resoudre. Nous presentons enfin quelques idees de base pour developper un systeme expert permettant d'ameliorer l'interpretation des resultats. Cet analyseur a ete industrialise sous le nom de 'POLYGAM NU416'.
