Stopped kaon experiment for K+ → π+νν-bar. From E787 to E949 and the future

Description
The stopped kaon experiment is currently the best method to observe the rare decay K+ → π+νν-bar. In this review, after introducing the theoretical motivation and the BNL E787 detector, reasons why the K+ → π+νν-bar experiment is 'difficult' are explained from the author's viewpoint. The prospects for the BNL E949 experiment from 2001 and for a possible new stopped-kaon experiment in the future facilities are discussed thereafter. This review would be regarded as a point of departure for the Letter of Intent for new kaon-decay experiments at the 50-GeV Proton Synchrotron in the High-Intensity Proton Accelerator Facility by KEK and JAERI.
