In the last decade, partitioning and transmutation (P/T) has been revisited as an option for the back-end of the fuel cycle. However P/T should be considered both in relation to Pu management strategies and in relation to the development of innovative technologies in the fields of chemistry, fuel and reactor design. Some aspects of these issues are examined in the present paper from a scientific point of view
