Concept of safety PSA analysis of a deep radioactive waste repository in the Czech Republic

  • 1. Ustav Jaderneho Vyzkumu a.s., Rez (Czech Republic)

Description

In 1992, the Nuclear Research Institute (UJV) in Rez was appointed the principal coordinator for the Czech programme of development of a deep HLRW repository and spent nuclear fuel disposal facility for the existing as well as planned Czech nuclear power plants. The project consists in the conceptual preparation, development of applicable technologies, final selection of the optimum site for the radioactive waste repository, and its construction, so as to make the facility operable roughly after 2020. The report is the first in a series of documents dealing with probabilistic safety analysis (PSA) of the future deep radioactive waste repository. The specific aspects of the natural barriers and the construction of engineered barriers are not dealt with so far. Attention is focussed on the probabilistic safety analysis aspects related to the repository, the used and usable mathematical methods, and description of the various parts of the repository system. A survey is presented of the available model PSA solutions, including their description and instrumentation and computer techniques required for their implementation.
