Some aspects of industrial pollution as a result of oil recovery by an in-situ combustion process

Description

The environmental effects of enhanced oil recovery by in-situ combustion were discussed. The factors influencing the environmental impact on the work area and areas nearby, were examined, together with the factors involved in determining the composition of combustion gases. While some correlations have been detected, no firm conclusions could be reached due to lack of sufficient experimental evidence. Waste water generated in the process was also identified as being affected by the combustion process by increased content of phenols and other organic compounds. The chemicals and the technology most appropriate for the special treatment of waste water are not currently available in Romania. The next best solution appears to be biological treatment in multi-staged low-depth ponds with selected aquatic vegetation. Changes in legislation and more effective enforcement are likely to be the only reasonable solutions for the longer term. 12 refs., 3 tabs
