Study on heat removal system of dry storage facility for spent fuel

  • 1. Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., Tokyo (Japan)

Description

Dry vault type is one of the interim dry storage systems that adopts a natural convection air cooling system, needs no active systems, and generates little radioactive waste. The maximum allowable temperature of fuel cladding was determined on the basis of creep strain criteria for a long term dry storage environment in order to avoid cladding degradation. It was necessary to establish an evaluation method of heat transfer inside and outside the fuel loaded canisters for the design of storage facility. Therefore, the experimental and analytical studies of heat transfer of the dry vault storage system were carried out using experimental apparatus and the analysis program based on the finite element method.
