Solubility of tungsten in uranium monocarbide

  • 1. Japan Atomic Energy Research Inst., Oarai, Ibaraki. Oarai Research Establishment

Description

The solubility of W in UC was determined in the lower temperature range of 1,673--1,973K from the lattice parameters of the solid solution (U,W)C. The solubility increased with an increase in temperature from 0.79a/0 at 1,673K to 2.06a/0 at 1,973K. The heat of solution of W in UC was estimated to be 80+-10kJ/mol. The W content in the carbide was also measured by an electron probe microanalyzer. The results were consistent with those obtained by the X-ray diffraction measurements and revealed that fission products in carbide fuels might be quantitatively determined by the microanalysis.
