Nuclear energy as energy supply in Indonesia

The purpose of this study was to find out when nuclear energy was used as the last option consider several aspects. The study was conducted with the following methodology: data collection, data processing, planning national energy supply, and analysis. Planning of energy supply is simulated using MESSAGE program. MESSAGE is a program used to optimize the energy supply. The program is based on the principle of optimization with the least cost function considering a number of constraints such as the availability of energy resources, fuel, environment, and others. Results from the study showed that nuclear power plants are needed to supply the energy needs of electricity in the year 2023 with a capacity of 4000 MW. The capacity of nuclear power plants will increase with increasing of electricity energy demand and reach 64,000 MW in 2050. Considering the development of NPP project takes at least 10 years, then the government should have decided to build nuclear power plants and make as the last option on 2013. The limitations of site locations that have been evaluated should be an important factor and must be taken into consideration. (author)
