The Laboratorio Nacional de Luz Sincrotron

This paper reports on the problems of developing Science in a developing country which have received, over the years, considerable attention on the part of scientists and science administrators in the developed countries. Special institutions have been created to foster the goals of Science in the Third World and, through the goodwill of many individuals and institutions, opportunities are available to give deserving young researchers access to first class laboratories in the developed countries. But development, not only of Science, but understood in its broad economic, social and political terms, is, and will forever remain, the exclusive responsibility of the citizens of the Nation concerned. It is up to them to decide what sort of society they wish to create for themselves and their children
