Description

For several decades lead alkyls were the only successful performance-enhancing additives in gasoline, and no credible substitute could be found, despite many research efforts. The oil crises of the 70s and the heightened environmental awareness of the 80s and 90s, however, have led to the gradual adoption of fuel extenders, initially as a means for saving imported crude oil but currently mostly as a means for combatting combustion-generated air pollution. The research in this field is extensive and many-faceted. In this paper, the authors' approach is to combine and analysis of the chemical features of potential fuel components with engine measurement, thus attempting to couple better performance, in the form of higher octane and cetane numbers, with reduced exhaust emissions
