Results from emulsion experiments at the AGS and SPS
Description
The systematics achieved so far in multiplicity, pseudorapidity, fluctuations, intermittency etc., of charged particles produced in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions are reviewed. Data from emulsion experiments is utilized. It seems that the geometry of the nuclear collision and the number of participating nucleons play an important role. Results are compared with the predictions of different models (FRITIOF, VENUS, RQMD etc.). Results on projectile and target fragmentations at BNL AGS and CERN SPS energies are also presented. Evidence for the collective flow of the projectile fragments at BNL AGS energy has been obtained. For a few central events, at CERN SPS energies, energy densities of the hot overlap zone are estimated to be above the theoretically predicted threshold for the deconfinement phase transition.
