Radiation and thermal tests of Compton emission neutron detectors with hafnium-based emitter

Description

Results of measuring the sensitivity and insulation resistance of Compton emission neutron detectors (CEND) of the cable type with an emitter containing hafnium and an insulation of magnesiUm oxide are presented. The measurements are performed in the TVV-2M research reactor and implied the possibility of independent alteration of radiation intensity and sample temperature. Empyric formulae are obtained to calculate the CEND insulation current and resistance from known temperature and neutron flux density. It is shown that the temperature dependence of sensitivity of the CEND with the emitter containing hafnium is less expressed than that for the detector with a silver emitter. A conclusion is made that results obtained prove the importance of electric fields in the insulation of emission detector for the processes current-formation in them
