Treatment of high level waste and spent fuel for final disposal--the proposed KBS-plan

  • 1. Karnbranslesakerhet, Stockholm, Swed

Description

Swedish law requires a description of the handling and final storage of either the high level waste from reprocessing or the spent, unreprocessed nuclear fuel. The Nuclear Fuel Safety Project (KBS) was organized by Swedish nuclear power industry to investigate these alternatives. A summary is given of some of the main findings of the two KBS reports. Emphasis is placed on the proposed engineered barriers for providing redundant safety features when residual heat would cause a considerable temperature rise in the repository. 17 refs
