Investigation of some characteristics of a liquid methane pulsed ionization chamber

  • 1. AN SSSR, Moscow. Inst. Yadernykh Issledovanij

Description

The yield of free electrons from the tracks of electrons with an energy of Esub(e) = 1.06 MeV and protons of Esub(p) = 14,5 MeV has been measured in liquid methane. The electric field strength dependence of the attachment coefficient of electrons to O2 molecules in liquid methane for E = 0.18 - 1.8 kV x cm -1 has been obtained. The electron drift velocities in liquid methane and mixtures (Ar + CH4) with a methane content of 1%, 5% and 10% in the range of electric field strengths of E = 0.3 - 2 kV x cm-1 have been measured. The liquid methane chamber was used to detect neutrons with an energy of 14.5 MeV. (orig.)
