Production and scattering of isomeric nuclear beams

Description

Methods previously developed to produce low-energy, excited isomeric nuclear beams, specifically 18Fm(Jπ = 5+) have been successfully extended to higher bombarding energies. These beams (18Fm, E ∼ 25 MeV/u) have been scattered from protons to provide initial data on p+(metastable) elastic scattering and other reactions. This demonstrates the feasibility of producing a variety of high-spin, isomeric beams and using them in various experiments where their unusual properties are expected to play a significant role: inelastic scattering with Q>0; fission and fusion; transfer reactions to high Jπ, COULEX and γ-ray spectroscopy; EM projectile break up and soft Eλ excitation modes; etc. The latter, in particular, are related to the special open-quotes haloclose quotes structure of certain types of isomeric states
