Ba2YCu3O6.9 powder derived from nitrate-based precursors

Description

Ba2YCu3O6.9 superconductor powder prepared by calcining a nitrate precursor obtained by spray drying an aqueous solution of barium, yttrium, and copper nitrate. Upon calcination to 700 degree C, a nonsuperconducting tetragonal phase (t)' as determined by XRPD was observed. The superconducting phase was not obtained until calcining to >900 degree C. Thermal gravimetric analysis showed that a small weight loss occurred between 700 degree C and 950 degree C. Temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and TGA-FTIR experiments confirmed that the weight loss was due to the presence of CO2 in the product. This suggests that CO2 acts to stabilize the t' phase in the BYC lattice
