TBR extraction of tantalum thiocyanate complexes

Description
Extraction of thiocyanate complexes of tantalum by tributylphosphate from hydrochloric and sulphuric acid solutions has been investigated in relation to the pH of the aqueous phase, the concentration of NCS ions and the extractant. The data of the physicochemical analysis and of the IR and NMR spectra show that extraction of tantalum occurs according to the hydrate-solvate mechanism with the formation, in the organic phase, of associates [H(H2O)sub(n)πTB]x[TaO(NCS)4], where NCS ions are coordinated to the Ta=O group via the nitrogen atom. At the same time, extraction of free HNCS is observed
