The risk significance of PWR transient accidents from PRA studies

Description

A study has been completed which estimates the relative early fatality risk from PWRs for five accident types. Nine PRA studies were used as the basis for this study. The results of these studies were modified and extended to provide a relative measure of early fatality risks for PWRs currently operating or under construction in the U.S. The results indicate that early fatality risks are dominated (over 40% of the total risk) by transient-initiated accidents, followed by interfacing system LOCAs (37%). Loss-of-coolant accidents from primary system pipe breaks were found to contribute about 20%
