Description
Terrestrial radiation originates from the radioactive elements found in almost all rocks and minerals. Certain geological features like fractures, faults, extent of metamorphism, weathering etc., modify the concentration of the radioactive elements. Enrichment of uranium bearing fluid during shearing, development of rock deformational structures, metamorphism and post deformational weathering, are the primary parameters that enhances the gamma radiation and the radon exhalation within the shear zones. The present study near Jaduguda was undertaken to assess the radiation levels (both in situ gamma radiation and the radon exhalation) from the uranium mineralised Singhbhum Shear zone and to understand the geological controls on the radiation environment, within a passive shear zone.
