Neutron production and protection in medium-energy accelerators
Description
In the medium incident-energy range (a few tens or hundreds of MeV) the variety of projectiles produced by accelerators has become much wider over the last decade. The production of neutrons by particles ranging from protons to heavy ions is main-protection problem to be solved at the preliminary draft stage of a machine and its knowledge is fundamental to the work of the radioprotection specialist. Medium-energy physical phenomena leading to neutrons of quite different relative abundances and energies according to the type of accelerated particle, especially for 'thick targets', are described. Developments in heavy ion physics and radioprotection experience at the Orsay IPN allow experimental results to be accounted for and new predictions made in the heavy ion field, as a function of energy per nucleon in particular. The neutron yield of the targets and the energy of the neutrons have a strong influence on the amount and choice of shielding around an accelerator
Abstract (French)
Dans le domaine des energies incidentes moyennes (quelques dizaines ou centaines de MeV) la palette de projectiles produits par les accelerateurs s'est largement etendue dans la derniere decennie. La production de neutrons par les particules allant du proton aux ions lourds constitue le probleme essentiel de radioprotection des le stade d'un projet de machine. La connaissance de cette production est un outil de base du radioprotectionniste; on decrira les phenomenes physiques aux energies moyennes conduisant a des abondances relatives et des energies de neutrons tres differentes selon le type de projectile accelere, en particulier pour les 'cibles epaisses'. Les developpements de la physique des ions lourds et des connaissances en Radioprotection a l'IPN d'Orsay permettent de rendre compte des resultats experimentaux et faire de nouvelles predictions dans le domaine des ions lourds en fonction de l'energie par nucleon notamment. Les consequences du rendement neutronique des cibles et l'energie des neutrons sont considerables quant a l'importance et au choix des blindages autour d'un accelerateurAdditional details
