Current sheath structure in a linear Z-pinch device

  • 1. Physics Dept., Azhar Univ., Cairo (Egypt)

Description

A current sheath structure in a linear Z-pinch device has been investigated using magnetic probe measurements. A reversed current effect was detected in hydrogen and argon gases. The radial distribution of, Bθ and Jz were investigated. The pinch ratio, Kp = (rp/r0) where rp is the radius of the compressed plasma at the pinch and r0 = 3 cm, was also determined. The minimum pinch ratios km were 0.312 in hydrogen, at a pressure of 3.75 torr and 0.34 in argon, at a pressure of 0.05 torr. The snow plow and the slug models were used separately to investigate the physical processes in the different stages of the pinch. (author)
