Measurement techniques for short bunches

Description
Instrumentation, especially for transverse beam size, has a vital role in linear collider development and operation. If strongly integrated into the control system, it can provide powerful optimization and stabilization feedback. Through the widespread use of transverse beam size monitors of sufficient precision and speed, some subsystem tolerances may be relaxed, ultimately providing cost reduction. A new class of beam size monitor must be developed for monitoring the collider close-quote s sub-micron bunches. We first review some examples of instrumentation and it close-quote s use from the Stanford Linear Collider (SLC) and then describe some planned beam size monitors in the SLAC complex. copyright 1995 American Institute of Physics
